“Here and Now; Stay Strong; Never Give Up” –
Inspirational and encouraging layered canvas mixed media paper-art handcrafted by Sandpaper Road.

I created this piece the week my father passed away just before Christmas Day 2020. The under-most canvas layer is textured and chaotic, just as I felt. Dad’s passing was unexpected, and the whole family was hurting. The next layer is a tag with white birds. There’s a struggle when you lose someone, the struggle of letting the person go and wanting to tie the person close to you. So, on the canvas, I tied a ribbon around and around the base. The ribbon holds down the bottom of the tag, but the spirit of the birds still flies free, no matter how hard you try to tie it down.
The next layers are frames and flowers. Trying to capture those moments in time to remember – remember words, laughter, moments, all those moments seem different now. Like you can almost see through the moments to a world you were not expecting to see so soon. Flowers, colorless, yet expressive.
The next layer is metal. Strength. Solid. Determined. This is a time to capture, remember and value. Preserve and hold this specific moment in time as a single experience – the catalyst to a whole life of change going forward. Dad was a pillar of strength for me in a variety of life experiences, and his presence frames every corner of my life and will continue to do so.
Finally, the canvas piece is finished with the phrases “Here and Now”, “Stay Strong”, and “Never Give Up”.
Every time I look at this piece, I acknowledge my grief AND I feel encouraged to press on TODAY. I sincerely hope and pray that this piece does the same for you, as well.
