Tutorial | Sweet Birthday Card | Sandpaper Road

For a tasty summer birthday treat, I’m sharing a quick photo-tutorial for two new cards! Both card varieties feature the “Sweet Birthday” stamp from Technique Junkies, part of the July 2021 New Release.

The most important thing about this technique is to use a stamping platform and DO NOT MOVE THE STAMP until the whole card is complete.

First, I used StazOn Ink to stamp the image on a scrap piece of vinyl. The vinyl I am using is the kind you would use for projects with your electric cutting machine. I had a lot of scraps leftover after cutting out vinyl letters, so I often use the scraps as masks.

After I stamped the image on the vinyl, I cut out the word “Sweet”.

Then, I used Archival Ink to stamp the image again on white cardstock. After the ink was dry, I laid the vinyl mask over top of the image. Then I stamped again over the mask, but I used VersaMark Ink. The VersaMark Ink stamped through the open cut-out, so embossing ink was ONLY over the word “Sweet”. I removed the mask, poured red embossing powder over the image, and heat-set the powder.

For the ice cream and the cone, I stamped on separate cardstock and colored in the images with Distress Oxide Ink and Waterbrush Pens. Then I fussy-cut the ice cream and cone and glued them onto my main stamped image. I adhered the main image onto a card panel I created with the Weathered Wall background stamp and some white embossing powder. I love this look!

For my second version of this card, I did the same thing with the mask, except that I placed the tiny vinyl cut-out OVER TOP of the word “sweet”. I had to stamp it once just to see where to place the mask. Then, my stamped image was done in a sand-colored VersaColor Ink and I embossed it with clear powder. I am not sure if you can get VersaColor ink anymore (I’ve had my ink-pad for quite a while!). Then, I colored in the cone and ice cream with Distress Oxide Inks

After the main image was finished, I removed the mask from over top of the word “sweet” and put the large mask over everything. Then, I stamped “sweet” in VersaMark and embossed with red powder. As a final touch, I sprayed the whole thing with a touch of Iridescent Shimmering Bliss. Finally, I used a circle die for the image and mounted that on top of 2 shaped dies. One was just regular patterned paper from my stash, and the other was a scrap of paper that I die cut after spraying with Dolphin Cove Shimmering Bliss.

Play around with stamping and masking and you will see the variety you can get from your stamps!
